Behind this name hides a complex of Baroque buildings in Dresden, which now mainly contain galleries and museums. The name Zwinger refers to the space between the outer and inner walls of fortifications. The complex of buildings was built in the 18th century, in just such a place and so got its name.

The building was designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann in the Baroque style. From the beginning, the Zwinger functioned as “amusement park” for the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong, and inspired the residences of Louis XIV in France. Various forms of parties and social events were held here.
Later, various collections and galleries began to move into the complex. Here you will find over 20,000 exhibits, the most famous being Mathematics and Physics Salon and the largest collection of porcelain in the world.
