The chateau is situated on the banks of the Elbe River in the village of Pillnitz, which is now part of Dresden. The chateau is unique – it is built in the “chinoiserie” style – a style that mimics Chinese design. The interior and exterior of the chateau are built in Chinese style.
The chateau’s history dates back to 1400. It was originally built as a fortified castle, but the castle was gradually changed and the famous Augustus the Strong gave it to his mistress – and when she displeased him, he took it back again.
The main castle stairs lead up from the Elbe. There, the nobility liked to sail boats, especially gondolas.
The chateau park is very rich, and is composed of English, Dutch and Chinese gardens. On display are greenhouses with palm trees and an orangery. A unique feature is the Japanese camellia from 1767, now 250 years old. Although it is a bush, its height is ten meters.
